Explore India — Make a Trip of It
"There are some parts of the world that, once visited, get into your heart and won't go. For me, India is such a place. When I first visited, I was stunned by the richness of the land, by its lush beauty and exotic architecture, by its ability to overload the senses with the pure, concentrated intensity of its colors, smells, tastes, and sounds. It was as if all my life I had been seeing the world in black and white and, when brought face-to-face with India, experienced everything re-rendered in brilliant technicolor."
— Keith Bellows, Editor-in-Chief, National Geographic Traveler
India's sprawling, chaotic, endlessly fascinating capital. Ancient monuments sit alongside world-class restaurants and buzzing nightlife. Spend 2–3 days here to ease yourself in. Don't miss the majesty of the Red Fort, the towering Qutb Minar, and India Gate, with time to wander the grand colonial arcades of Connaught Place and shop and dine at Khan Market. Most international flights land here — it's the natural starting point for your India adventure.
Day Trips & Stops from Delhi
Agra
3 hrs from Delhi by train or road
Home to the Taj Mahal — one of the most breathtaking things you will ever see in your life. Visit at sunrise, when the light is soft and the crowds are thin, or at sunset for a warm, golden glow. Round out the day with a beautiful dinner at The Oberoi, with views of the Taj. Agra is easily done as a day trip from Delhi on the fast Gatimaan Express train, or as an overnight stop on your way south to Rajasthan.
Jaipur
5 hrs from Delhi · 6 hrs from Udaipur
The Pink City — Amber Fort, the iconic Hawa Mahal façade, and some of the best shopping in Rajasthan. Jaipur sits perfectly between Delhi and Udaipur, making it a natural overnight stop. Stock up on block-print textiles, silver jewellery, and blue pottery before the wedding.
Mumbai
India's Most Cosmopolitan City
The place to arrive jet-lagged and immediately fall in love with India. Eat your way through the street food stalls of Bandra, walk the Marine Drive promenade at dusk, visit the Gateway of India, and explore the colonial grandeur of South Mumbai. The restaurant scene is outstanding. International guests flying via Mumbai can easily spend 2–3 days here before flying to Udaipur.
Further Afield — Worth the Journey
Goa
1.5 hrs from Mumbai by air
India's beach paradise — Portuguese-colonial architecture, spice plantations, palm-fringed coastline, and a wonderfully laid-back pace. The north and south Goa coastlines each have a very different character. Best combined with a Mumbai visit before or after.
Jodhpur
5 hrs from Udaipur · 6 hrs from Jaipur
The Blue City. Mehrangarh Fort looms dramatically over a sea of indigo-painted houses. The food is some of the best in Rajasthan — don't leave without trying dal baati churma. A great extension for those spending more time in Rajasthan.
Kerala
2.5 hrs from Mumbai by air
Lush backwaters, spice-scented air, and a completely different pace and cuisine to the north. A houseboat stay on the Kerala backwaters is one of India's most memorable experiences. Perfect for those wanting to extend their trip into something truly special.
Udaipur - Our Wedding City
City Palace & the Old City
The City Palace complex is extraordinary — a labyrinth of courtyards, mirror rooms and lake views built over 400 years. The old city below is perfect for wandering — narrow lanes, rooftop cafés, and artisan shops. We recommend arriving a day or two early to explore.
Lake Pichola & Jag Mandir
Take a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola and stop at Jag Mandir island palace for drinks overlooking the water. The light on the lake at golden hour is something you won't forget. Easily arranged through the Raffles concierge.
First Time in India? 🇮🇳
A few things to know before you go — from people who love it.
🌶️
The Food
Say yes to everything — Indian food is extraordinary and wildly regional. That said, a few simple habits will keep you feeling your best throughout the trip. Always drink bottled or sealed water (including for brushing teeth), and avoid ice in drinks at smaller establishments. At roadside stalls and local dhabas, stick to food that is freshly cooked and served hot — the sizzling dishes coming straight off the tawa are generally the safest and most delicious bet. Salads and raw produce are best avoided unless you're at a hotel or restaurant you trust. When in doubt, order what's hot and busy — if locals are eating it, it's usually a very good sign.
🎨
What to Pack
Light, breathable fabrics are key. October is warm so pack accordingly. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Modest clothing is appreciated at temples and religious sites.
🚕
Getting Around
Uber and Ola work in most cities and are the easiest way to get around. Auto-rickshaws are an adventure — always agree on a price beforehand or insist on the meter.
🧘
The Golden Rule
Things may not always go to plan, and that's part of the magic. Embrace the unpredictability, go with the flow, and you'll have the trip of your life.
